Bandage lenses are mainly used in a hospital setting to protect the corneal surface, relieve pain, provide protection, drug delivery and to assist in corneal hydration. Most lenses are plano, with a large diameter- typically 15mm. Hydrogels were the material of choice for many years, but silicone hydrogels with their innate permeability and resistance to dehydration are increasingly taking over from them.
